🦔 🦔 The Eco Team from years 5 and 4 were out today working on Project Hedgehog.
After making sure the garden has access holes to allow hedgehogs to come and go, using an old plastic storage container the team have built a cat proof feeding station for any local hedgehogs. We have located a wildlife camera in front of it to catch any overnight visitors. 📷 📷 The team also learnt today about the importance of providing fresh water and cat food for local hedgehogs at this time of year to fatten them up for their upcoming hibernations. They also added an extra, rainproof ground floor layer to the bug hotel which they filled with dry hay and leaves to provide a resting place for any 🦔 who drop by. Who knows, they may stay for winter!

Year 1 were out in force this morning making a bug hotel out of our newly donated pallets for resident insects and then planting up some lavender for next spring as part of our "Pollinator Planter" Project. Watch this space to see how they grow and for further details of our planned dedicated pollinator friendly planter for the school grounds. 🌱
A big "thank you" from everyone here at Busy Bees to Comley Reclaim of Farnham for the amazing planters they have donated to the garden and the beautiful raised stands which they have made for the garden to host the pupil's pots of plants - keeping them up off the ground safely away from stray footballs. Another massive thank you goes out to Geoff Lucas at Forge Farm for the treated timber which he very generously donated to form our new picket fencing. What wonderful local businesses we have!
Following the 18 months during which parents were not allowed to remain on school grounds due to Covid 19, the garden needed a huge overhaul this summer which was undertaken by several families and which has meant we now have the old wooden vegetable beds back in working order and the perennial plants tamed and back in a manageable state. The garden is the size of a standard allotment, so has several raised beds and two apple trees. Several families came together this weekend to get many jobs done at the garden, including building a new picket fence, preparing our raised beds for the winter and getting our new sign fitted.
