Another sunny and busy Thursday down in the garden today.
Two groups of Year 2 pupils learnt about sowing sweet pea seeds and got some into pots (well, eco and sweat pea friendly toilet rolls…..) and got some potatoes chitting on the class windowsill ahead of the planting window in March. William from Year 5 gave an impromptu lesson to some pupils from Reception on the importance of feeding birds and lots of the KS1 pupils got stuck into some weeding in the strawberry patch and worm hunting. 🍓 🥔 People are buzzing about the Busy Bees! We are absolutely delighted to announce that in the past few weeks the school garden at Rowledge C of E Primary School and the Busy Bees Gardening & Wildlife Club have been chosen to be the lucky recipients of four grants to support the wonderful work being undertaken in the school garden. We are pleased to let our supporters know that we have been awarded grants from: - The Farnham Round Table - The RHS as part of their Connected Communities Project - East Hampshire District Councillor David Ashcroft - Hampshire County Councillor Mark Kemp-Gee The funds are going to be put to good use and, along with a generous donation from the Friends of Rowledge School charity, will allow the Club to: - purchase and install a part glazed potting and storage shed in the school grounds for use by the pupils; - design and have made a bespoke Market Cart from reclaimed materials on which the pupils will maintain a permanent herb garden and offer their produce to local residents outside the school gates; and - purchase and install a dedicated "pollinator friendly" raised planter within the school grounds for the children to plant and maintain. We would like to pass on our thanks to these wonderful contributors and the volunteers and local residents who continue to support the team's work in the garden. Bring on the spring!
Reception Class enjoyed some chilly fun today in the garden during our Thursday afternoon volunteer session. Flora kindly lead a creative class of 'Ice Art', helping the children forage for leaves and berries to include in their pictures. The excitement of unveiling them was wonderful to see on Friday morning!
Classes from across the school have this week participated in the Farnham in Bloom "Design a Flower Bed" competition. With a theme of "Pollinators", the winning entry will be made into a carpet bed in Gostrey Meadow this spring. We are keeping our fingers crossed - the children all put huge amounts of thought and effort into their designs and over 120 were entered into the competition from the school. The Busy Bees Club were delighted to pledge to "Bee the Change" alongside the Bumblebee Conservation Trust in 2021 - and the great work of the children has been recognised by the Trust and included on their website:
https://www.bumblebeeconservation.org/beethechange/blog/our-school-garden/ The "Bee the Change" project launched by the Society in 2021 is all about quick, simple ways you can make your local area more bumblebee-friendly. It doesn’t matter if you live in the city or the countryside. If you have a garden, a flower pot – or no outdoor space at all! Bumblebees do an amazing job pollinating our crops and wildflowers. But as our towns and countryside change, there are fewer flowers to feed on, so bumblebees need a helping hand to survive and the Busy Bees team are doing what they can to help the pupils at the school make a real difference. This week we are helping the pupils to participate in the 2022 "Farnham in Bloom" flower bed design competition - if anyone would like to volunteer to help a small group of pupils to get their ideas on paper this Thursday afternoon between 12-3pm please let Sarah or Flora know.
Its nearly here! It may be a bit cold and damp outside but the birds are busy and the RSPB are getting ready for the Big Garden Birdwatch, it’s nearly here! Get it in the diary - 28th to 30th January. We would love the children to take part and let us know what they spotted!
Our free, child friendly bird spotter pack has arrived and you still have time to apply for one. Sign up today online with the RSPB and they will send you a free handy guide for identifying the common birds you are likely to see you in your garden 🐦 Be wowed by your local wildlife. Big Garden Birdwatch is for everyone, whether you're a complete beginner or a birding expert. Simply count the birds you see in your garden, from your balcony or in your local park for one hour between 28 and 30 January 2022. Please let Sarah or Flora know if you would like to join the team down at the garden this Thursday afternoon between 12- 3pm to help prune the two apples trees. Winter is the perfect time to prune apple trees and they are rather overdue some TLC! The weather is looking wonderful for some fresh air. Hopefully see you there!
